Gurudongmar Lake, Sikkim

One of the highest lakes in the world, Gurudongmar Lake in Sikkim, is situated at an altitude of 17000 ft. This fresh-water lake is located northeast of the Kangchenjunga range in Sikkim.

With the backdrop of high snow covered peaks, a glacier with the same name and crystal clear blue water, Gurudongmar Lake, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in India.

The lake remains completely frozen in the winter months from November to Mid-May.

While Sikkim has some of the most beautiful lakes in India, Gurudongmar Lake is the largest and like others considered as sacred according to the local tradition of Sikkim.

Pichola Lake, Udaipur

Situated in the city of Udaipur in Rajasthan, Pichola Lake is an artificial fresh water lake, which was named after the nearby Picholi village.

Built in 1362 AD by Banjara, Pichola Lake comprises of two islands Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir.

Stretched across the range of 4kms, the surroundings and the several islands within the Pichola Lake have been developed over the centuries, comprising of various palaces, temples, mansions etc.

One of the famous palaces is the Lake Palace or Jag Nivas, which is located in the middle of the Pichola Lake on the Jag Island.

Although Udaipur is known as the ‘city of lakes’, for having several beautiful lakes in the city, Lake Pichola is one of the prominent lakes of the city.

Dal Lake, Srinagar

One of the most beautiful lakes in the country, Dal Lake is the second largest lake in the Kashmir Valley.

While Kashmir is often called as heaven on earth, the Dal Lake is known as the “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir”.

An icon of the Kashmir tourism industry, Dal Lake comprises of floating gardens, colorful shikaras and houseboats which attracts various tourists from across the world.

Crystal clear water of Dal Lake in the setting of natural color of the sprawling valley and great peaks in the distance and the traditionally designed boats on the lake makes it a an amazing view for any spectator.

Pangong Lake, Ladakh

Situated on one of the highest altitude in the world, Pangong Lake is located about 160 km from Leh.

Known as one of the most breathtaking lakes of India, Pangong Lake is located on the Line of Actual Control. While one-third of the lake lies in India, the remaining two-third is in Tibet.

With the backdrop of great snow covered mountains and rocky terrains, Pangong Lake does give a serene experience to the spectators.

Chilka Lake, Odisha

Known as one of the largest coastal lake in India, Chilka Lake in Odisha is also the second largest lagoon in the World.

Considered as the largest salt water lake across Asia, Chilka Lake is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian sub-continent.

The lake is an ecosystem with large fishery resources and is also home to a number of threatened species of plants and animals.

Chilika Lake, popularly known as Chilka, is the queen of natural scenery in the tribal state Orissa, also known as the Swiss-lake in the continent.
