Panvel is a city that is located in the Raigad District of the state of Maharashtra. Panvel is locally called as the gateway to the Konkani region. Panvel is an old place and the earliest known settlement in the region was around 3000 years ago. There are many old buildings and havellis that are located in the city if Panvel and it was an affluent city during the colonial period and also during the time of the Peshawahis.

Recently the city has been modernized and there are many interesting sites that one can visit. The Karnala Fort is situated on the road from Panvel to Pen and this is one of the most important tourist places in the region. There is a bird sanctuary that is located at the bottom of the fort and one can see many different species of migratory birds in the region. There are over 150 species of birds that can be seen in the area.

There are two important temples that are located near Panvel and they are known as Varadavinayaka and the Balaeshwar Pali temples. The Elephanta Caves, Haji Malang, Karanala and Karjat are located nearby and these are also important tourist destinations.
